Re: Daylights

you mean the DRLs... in some EU countries they are compulsory, up to you if you have them on or off here.

Re: Daylights

There's no partcular 'point' to them, here in the UK at least, but if you turn them off (through the Menu system) you don't have the option of sidelights on the column stalk

Re: Daylights

I think DRLs are a better idea than auto headlights. I have seen cars driving on dull murky motorways in thick spray without lights and then they pop on and back off again as the auto lights kick in.

People get to rely on them. At least DRLs are guaranteed to be on for these.

DRLs were bought in for countries (Scandanavian) who have climates with limited daylight for much of the year.

My personal view is that drivers should put lights on as appropriate for the conditions, but I guess there can be no harm in having lights on all the time other than looking a bit conspicuous.

Cheers
Baldrick

Re: Daylights

I've had a Volvo for 7 years with DRL. In fact I haven't touched the light switch for 7 years, they come on with the ignition. The problem is that when I jump into another car I often forget to switch the lights on, particularly if I'm in an area with street lighting so if the 500 has DRL I'll leave them on as I'm used to them.

DRL do make other drivers more aware of you. I always have the lights on when driving my Caterham just so that people can see me, in a small car people just drive out in front of you.

I also think they are useful for the hundreds of numpties out there who don't know how to switch their lights on when it is foggy, or when its wet etc etc.
Or people who use sidelights on a foggy day.

I believe it is going to be a requirement in UK in a couple of years time. Sadly its legislation because people don't have the common sense to switch lights on when they are really needed, so the result is we all have to drive around with them on all of the time.

Re: Daylights

I think the various people that have been looking into DRLs in the UK came to the conclusion that we arent having them here... as their findings were inconclusive!

Re: Daylights

Just remember if you turn your DRLs off you can't just stick your side lights on with your column stalk You only have dipped and main beam options.

Re: Daylights

Does anyone know that when the DRLs are on, are the lights at the back on aswell or is it just the side lights that are on at the front?

Just that I've seen a few videos on youtube and I'm sure the DRLs on the front were on but there weren't any lights on at the back of the car...

Re: Daylights

Correct: the DRLs only operate at the front of the car. Which is a bit daft.

Exactly, because when you have your sidelights on it's not just because you want the lights on the front to be on, but also the lights at the back so other cars can see you when it's raining heavy or when it's starting to get dark...

Re: Daylights

Side lights are for parking only.Headlights should be used where weather conditions dictate. The technical term for sidelight is position light.

The reason they are there apart from parking at night is, if a headlight blows then the position light shows other drivers the position of the cars offside or nearside.
