I know what you mean about the old days and yes I will call you old fashioned ;) because things move on and in 20 years time these will be the good old days too. (y)
Yes I am sure there are still some "real" Alfisti who would look at a front wheel drive 156 with disdain...

No one spotted the obvious around Petrol / Diesel debate.

The simple fact is that if you do over 18K miles a year, then after 3 years you will have gained back any price difference.

I an slightly confused around the premium for diesel being talked about, as I am looking at the pricelist and it is saying that the 1.4 & 1.3 MJ Lounge, AND the 1.4 & 1.3 MJ Sport are 10700 OTR.

dude...we're talking about difference in price between 1.2 and 1.3...it's £1400

And according to my calculations at 10000 miles per annum it would take 11 years to break even at todays fuel costs.......approx 6 years for 18000 years. Granted the diesel will probably sell for more on the used market but not that much more.

I guess it is easier to jusify the 1.3 over the 1.2 rather than the 1.4 as the latter will be less economical, however, I think we are all kidding ourselves as if it came down to pure costs the Panda would be the obvious choice.

It comes down to what you like and I could point you to three decent reviews where the reviewer has plumped for each of the three engines.

exactly, I bought the 1.3 purely because thats what I prefered. Only one I didnt want was the 1.4, too thirsty and dont like 6 speed gearboxes... too many for me:)
Well I got used to 6 speeds in my 156 V6, now that was thirsty :)

The 147 the 500 will replace does about 27mpg, so the 500 should be a substantial saving, even with the 1.4

Cheers

I'll second that. Whichever model and engine you go for it's bound to be more economical than anything previous generation...except maybe the 1.4 Audi A2 diesel, a very unpopular but miraculous feat of inexpensive all-alloy engineering from the late 90's...
