Re: 500 Front light bulbs change

DRL - I just bought these MTEC http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/400385373634 at 8.99 a pair as opposed to the more expensive PIAA ones which are 18.95 on thiefbay but can be found for considerably more.

Thanks to the guide I have just one slight blood loss rather than many as it is very tight in there. I found that by turning the wheel out I had more room to get in and needed some wide nose pliers to tease the holder sufficiently anticlockwise. The offside was a little more tricky as you need a third hand to hold cables out of the way.

So pleased with the difference.

Re: 500 Front light bulbs change

Just used this guide to help out a colleague. Unfortunately I didn't have the right bulb in my spares kit so I'll have to donate a little more knuckle skin to put the new one in. Cheers!

Re: 500 Front light bulbs change

Hi all

My wife has just picked up her 500 and i have changed the H7's out for some nightbreakers.

However, im having a mare with the DRL's.

I can get to them but cant get the bulb out. I have turned the housing as shown on this site, however the bulbs just seem too large to get out of the hole. I dont want to pul, too hard as im sure they will pop off and remain stuck within the lens.

Any advice?

Thanks

Re: 500 Front light bulbs change

Hi All

Recently we had our fiat 500 2011 car serviced and the mechanic pointed out there was an inspection hatch and rubber protective cap missing.

This could be a problem in the rain as the surface water is getting in and can effect the electrics.

I'm looking for the inspection hatch on the front wheel arch and the rubber protective cap (page 135 owners handbook, FRONT LIGHT CLUSTERS), but I'm unable to find any spares anywhere even went into local Fiat dealership which were useless.

Any of you peeps had similar issues?

If so how did you overcome ?

Many thanks

Re: 500 Front light bulbs change

Well after losing a shed load of knuckle skin the bulbs have finally been changed!

Much easier once the wheels are off.

Re: 500 Front light bulbs change

I've just tried to do our full beam H1's.
I gave up!

Thanks very much indeed for your excellent guide and photographs, so I knew exactly what to do ..........................

Except that we have wide tyres (185 55R15) on alloys, and there was no way I could see into the housing well enough. I got the outer cover off easily enough and the inner round cover off too, but I couldn't see in sufficiently well to see what I was doing. Yes, I turned the steering to full lock.

The best way to do it, would be to take the wheels off. Maybe jacking the front up high might do it instead??

Too cold out there to carry on into the late afternoon, and the light is failing (Dec 30th), so I've given up and opened a beer.

Next time, I'll try jacking up as far as I can to see if when the wheel drops, it gives more room. Other than that, it's take the wheels off, but that seems like overkill just to change a bulb.

Thanks for the guide. Well written and easily followed.

Regards,
Mick.

Re: 500 Front light bulbs change

Just to say that I've replaced the full beam H1 bulbs, and my hands don't seem too scarred! There's not much room in there for chunky masculine hands.

I jacked up the front, turned the wheel to full lock, and although I could see better, I couldn't see well enough for a newbie, so I took the wheel off.

With the front jacked up and the wheel removed, I could see very easily.

If and when I have to get into that compartment again, I reckon just jacking up would be enough as I'm familiar with the "feel" of it now.

Thanks again, and Happy New Year!
Mick.

Wrong.

I've been out there this afternoon changing a blown DRL/Sidelight bulb, and there is no way on God's Earth that my fingers will reach inside to any effect.

With the car jacked up and the wheel off, at least I can see what I'm doing, but no way can I reach inside with my fingers of either hand. My hands are too big. My fingers are long enough, but too thick to get in.

I had to use snipe-nosed pliers to grip the holder to turn it.

Job done.

Thanks,
Mick.

Remember to cable tie on the access cover panel(need to drill some holes in the guard and door) they fall off and go missing.
Also I found, say when doing the nearside one, to unlatch the bulb with my right hand but continue and remove it with my left(I'm right handed) stand facing the rear, as you can turn your hand/fingers more easily with greater force, the opposite for the other side.
