Hi Folks

I was just reading a previous thread on upgrading from the original generator to an alternator.

Is this not possible (or more difficult) with the original 500 engine?

Any guidance appreciated.

I did it Tim; I found by asking on this Forum that ideally you need the 126 front main engine cowling or have to carefully modify the mounting and spacing of the two M6 dynamo mounting studs.

The impeller fits and the fan-belt alignment is OK. You may need a different fuel pump to clear the alternator.

Thanks Peter.

Gearbox is now reconditioned so this is the last thing to consider before putting the engine back in, ready for the NZ summer.

Nice to have but not need to have, if your dynamo is reconditioned i don't see why to upgrade to an alternator, 500 has no big demand in electric power.
I recently overhaul mine and i can tell you it is a very good quality and can last for many years. Just my opinion;)

Just out of interest, if I decide to go the alternator route, what mods need to be made to the tinware?

What alternator should be fitted, and once tinware is adjusted, does it just bolt on or are there any other adjustments to make? Wiring, voltage regulator, etc.

Someone is selling just the alternator engine cowl in order to made this modification but i don't remember where i saw it, (don't know if they are interchangeable dynamo and alternator type, but i guess they are) Also you will have to discard the voltage regulator and rewire, detail instructions are somewhere inside here, not a rocket science rather than expensive one.
