Hi all, where can I find the original / historic OTR price for the 500 and various models? R, L etc?


I'm thinking of having one as a company car and would base the benefit in kind payment on the original price.

I've got a page from a motoring magazine from the very early 60's which reviews the 500D. As a guide, the price back then was £399 including purchase tax and £484 for the Giardinera.

Incidentally, back in 1982 you could easily get a 500L at the auctions for £50.

the tax man got wise...

I can't recall what age, but if the actual value is greater than the original value then the actual value is the figure used.. (I used to work for HMRC and have my own business and thought about the same thing many years ago).
or that £4,175 you paid for your DB5 would be a really nice company car

And HMRC use independent assessors to value the car too..so you can't claim something you paid £10k+ for cost £499...

Never mind Rob; just think of the benefit you'll get from the mileage payments on such a frugal little beast.
But most of all (and I should know!) Simply being out and about in the Fiat and being paid for it should be reward enough in itself. :)

My understanding and that of my accountants is that if you have a car over 15 years old it's deemed as classic in the eyes of HMRC. If the today value is less than 15K GBP, then your BIK rate is based upon the original price of the car. If greater than 15K, then it's based upon the market value. That caters for the DB5 dream out the window :-(
There are then sliding scales depending upon Engine size and not C/O2 output.

They are not my accountant's, but this article, post some web surfing seems to tally and is from May 2016. So fairly recent.

However, still like to get ahold of list prices when new.

According to the test carried out by 'Motor' magazine in March 1966, the Fiat 500F had a basic price of£338-0s-0d-----to that you had to add £17-19s-7d purchase tax, which brought it up to a grand total of---£409-19s-7d. In March 1967 this had increased to the heady figure of---£417!
When 'Radbourne Racing' did the Abarth conversions on the 500 (from kits supplied by the Abarth factory--they are regarded as 'pukka') they charged £1 per cc. But to put it all into context, the Abarth engine conversion cost £121-17s-2d and the lowered suspension (fitted!!) was a massive £15

Pretty cool pricing info Hobbler. Of course, £15 in 1966 was a lot of money.

So, next issue. My preference is a "R" model but I don't believe these were ever imported into the UK. Is this the case? If so, I may have to get ahold of the price in Italy and convert it using historical exchange rate ????

working for HMRC had distinct advantages, even my accountant would call me for advice...
I cannot say about everything that was done.. but all these "Icebreaker" type schemes are really nothing new.... Trust agreements with companies in far off places and all sorts, every year they closed every loophole we used. (almost :))
 
So I went onto the main Fiat web site and sent in an enquiry. They've put me in contact with their heritage dept. I've emailed the chap, who is currently on holiday at the moment. Who should be able to assist.

Must say that I was impressed with the response from Fiat on this one. Most other heritage dept's I've tried to deal with have been painful.

From other web research, I don't think the R model was ever offical into the UK. The Italian prices seen to be around 600K lira.

So around £400 quid give or take some historical exchange rate at the time.
