Hi All. Well it's over for now,I 've just finished a 3 yr restoration and overcome Spanish beaurocracy to get my baby on the road.As I couldn't previously roadtest her because I bought it without a registration ,I am listening for any problems.
I ran around for about 30 minutes and she drove well but I did notice in 4th gear at about 70 kph the gearbox wined a bit. Is this normal?
And I noticed that changing gears it was best done slowly or do I have to double de-clutch?
She is a 1972 500L.

If it is the original 500 gearbox you DEFINATELY have to double-declutch on the down-shifts. With up-shifts you will probably get away with just gently moving through the gears (and clutch fully depressed, of course). The original 500 'boxes had no synchromesh at all--the 126 'boxes have synchro on 2+3+4. Which ever 'box you have fitted, I recommend that you only select 1st gear when the car stationary. Well done for persevering and turning out such a good looking 'wee beastie'

It's obviously an original box ,as you said moving up the box can be done gently and slowly without tol much clunking and down definately smoother by double declutching. How about the whining in top gear is that normal? Although it's not too noticeable
