Well, I took the old 69 Lusso down to the parts shop here in Italy and found an old fella who was a mechanic. I have a very limited understanding of Italian at this early point in my stay here! He took the 500L to his shop and changed out the clutch and rebuilt the brakes with new parts that I paid for at the parts store. The clutch was much smoother engaging than it had been. But coming up the hill to my house a week later it locked up in 2nd gear. I was finally able to get it functional again and got home, but while parked it was leaking transmission/clutch box fluid! It finally stopped leaking after about a day. I have spare fluid but have no idea where to check the fluid level or add additional fluid to get it back down the hill to the mechanic who worked on it! Can anyone point me in the right direction as to checking the current level of fluid and adding more if required? Thanks Eric:bang:

The clutch on the 500 is cable operated, so no leak from there. If you do have a gearbox leak, the chance that ALL the oil has leaked out is slim, so if the garage is only 2-3kms away you should be able to drive it gently to the garage with no problem. Filling the gearbox is very awkward unless you either put the car on stands at the rear (NEVER, NEVER work under a jack) or on a ramp as the filler/level plug is on the right side of the gearbox, between the bell-housing and the drive-shaft and normally VERY tight. The gear-box is filled through the filler plug until oil comes out of it--level then correct.

I work as a civilian for the Navy managing their Housing program in Naples. I've been here just under one year, on a three year tour. Second time round for us. I was in Sicily, then California for 5 years now back in Mainland Italy.....
I agree with the hobbler , as its down hill so you really won't be using the engine / gearbox .
The guy that did the previous work will likely be interested in what has occurred.
