Hello All,
Its great to know that this site exists and so helpful.
I own a Fiat 500 1971. This morning as I was driving up hill, the car started to loose lots of power. when pressing the gas pedal, it did not move forward. I used the choke and then it started to move again. When I got home i noticed the little red light "Generat" come on but when pressing the gas pedal, light would go off again. depress, light on and so forth.
Can anyone tell me what this means and maybe how to resolve?
Thank you in advance
Michael

What's the background of the car? Is it new to you? Have you been driving it without issue prior to this morning? Was the car completely warmed up when it started losing power going up the hill? Did the "generat" light stay on even with the choke applied?

Hi,
Ive had the car for about a year. No issues. The car was warmed up. The generat light goes off when gas is applied or choke is on. But if choke is off and no gas, it putters and shuts off.... any ideas?

If it runs well with the choke on and/or when applying gas, then I would think the idle speed/fuel mixture is off. Have you tried adjusting the carburetor fuel mixture/idling speed? That would be the first thing to try in my opinion. There are several threads outlining exactly how to adjust Weber 26 and 28 carburetors on this forum in case you need a tutorial.

As a side note, large temperature and altitude changes can significantly impact performance if the fuel mixture isn't adjusted.

The generator light will come on when the engine revs fall below a certain level (if you have a dynamo on your engine, at about 1,000rpm). The poor running could be as simple as a blocked low speed running jet (sometimes called the idle jet). The fact that the engine picks up when you pull the 'choke' on would indicate that the engine is being starved of fuel. The idle jet on the carb is, as you look at the carb from the rear of the car, the jet facing you at the bottom right of the carb--it has a screwdriver slot for removing/fitting. Try taking that out (engine turned off) and give it a good blow through. Take care, they often have a small rubber seal around the jet holder (the jet is the bottom part of the unit, and is removable--by pulling it out!).

Hi, I had a similar fault re. poor running and no power up hills, I decided it was the mixture and reset the mixture screw, all was well for a short time then problem re appeared, the mixture screw had again "tightened" up. It was then noticed that the mixture screw kept closing up itself. A new "O" ring on the mixture screw sorted the problem.

Thank you team.... I drove the car today and absolutely not an issue! As if it fixed it self.... hope fully no issues going forward
