Gentlemen, according to the 'pukka' 'book of words' the sump capacity for the 'tin' sump on a 500 is as follows:----During oil-change:--1.54qts (Imperial)--1.85qts (U.S)--1.75Lt. From dry:--1.85qts (imperial)--2.22qts (U.S.). So, as you can see, you get approximately 1/2 pint left in the engine during oil changes. As far as I can see, no 'factory' sump will accept 2,5 litres---the SMALLEST of the Alloy sumps take 3.5 litres. DO NOT try and put 2.5 litres into a 'tin' sump---the crank-shaft will dip into it and start causing all sorts of (probably quite expensive) problems.

Got to say Tom I disagree. The book of words does quote 1.75 ltr. The book of words is talking specifically about the 500D. I think the sumps changed in 1965. I have just done an oil change from a brand new 5 ltr can of oil and it literally took half the can to fill the sump up to the top mark on the dipstick. Every workshop manual I have every read regarding the F and L quote 2.5 ltr capacity. It's certainly more than 1.75 ltr and definitely more than 1.5 ltr.

I stand suitably corrected, advised and chastised!! My 'book of words' is indeed an original 500/500D book. Having read your comments, I dug out my 'Haynes' 126 manuals--for the 595 engine (as in the 500R) it lists 4.5 (imperial) pints--2.6 litres, but strangely, for the bigger 652cc engine it lists the capacity as 4 pints--2.25 litres (drain and refill, without filter)

Agreed, I wouldn't get two oil changes out of a 5 litre tin....great if I could. Does include interval top-ups though).

This a picture of the two dipsticks top one is a 650 engine bottom 500 both lying side by side and level at the neck where they would sit in the crankcase.

The first mark Max measures 6 inches or 153mm from the neck. The bottom mark Min measures 7.25 inches or 185mm from the neck. Also as you can see they are both 8 inches long from the neck.

I went ahead and filled it up to the mark at 6" on the dipstick, and lo and behold that was right around 2.4-2.5 liters! Thanks all for the help.
