Totally agree with you Peter with regard to the number of parts in a 'push-rod' valve-train that can all contribute to engine 'clatter', vis-a-vie the modern over-head-cam layout (still over-head valve--I am not aware of them being superseded--yet) which has a lot fewer moving parts, and if the camshaft is belt-driven, a LOT less parts to make noise! I don't know if it is just the quality (or rather, lack of) of 'pattern' parts, but I can't seem to remember having to do much in the way of tappet adjustment in-between scheduled servicing when I worked on them as a job--I don't think it is just a matter of 'only remembering the good bits' either.

An update to the cylinder-head story:
I tinkered about with an old head and it has made the engine serviceable. I'm not kidding myself that I've got a super-duper, long-life motor, but it's handy thing to have just in case of future issues...I would hate to be off the road for more than a few days.

It really did start first time, which is so much more than it had been doing for the last few months.

I am loosing track is that Murphio's proper engine minus the head. Notice I said proper?

Sounds sweet whatever one it is. BTW it started on the second time. Fake news as Donald would say:D

And your hi vis is probably not very hi anymore!!!!!!!

As with politicians, my aspiration was that it should start first time, so that's the same thing; isn't it?:D:D:D
The engine is the one Murf was born with and the head he's borrowed from his little brother should keep him ticking along for a while when I get round to reverting him back to normal.
The grease and oil camouflages me and helps to stop me from being spotted and being dragged off to do pointless, real-word things away from Fiats.:D
