Just taken your advice and a rubber mallet, yes a slight improvement but still too tight for the drum, ill try again tomorrow with the new pads.thanks again!
 
It used to be standard practice to lever the shoes inwards as others have described in order to back-off the auto. adjusters in order to refit the brake drums.

Just a longshot :-
Iirc there were 2 versions of these brake shoes with auto. adjusters fitted to the smaller Fiat models (500 - 850 + 127,128). The difference was in the length of the shoe web at the top i.e. the part that engages with the wheel cylinder. Depending on which shoe type and which model, either the drum would not fit or the brake pedal travel was dangerously long:eek:

If you happen to still have the old brake shoes, cylinders and backplates, you could compare these with the new components to see if there are any differences?

Hi again.Didn't I read on another thread that it is possible for the brake cylinder piston seals to turn back on themselves making it impossible for the piston to work. Another long shot I'm afraid.
 
Hi Everyone who has kindly helped with this one, I now have a nice pair of complete swing arms hubs and drums ready to go on the body as soon as its back from the bodyshop ( when I've finally decided on a colour, but thats something no one can help me with!)
Basically I think it was solved by a number of things;
Removal of excessive paint on the 'stubs' the shoes pivot on
Filing of the edges of the pressings of the handbrake levers.
The second manufacturers shoes seemed to be a better fit (even though with a vernier the differences were minimal)
The auto adjusters had to be unbelievably tight to the shoes wall.
centering had to be mm perfect.
I think I was unlucky in that all components were just to the tolerance limit and when they errors added up nothing was going to fit.
Once again many thanks, now back to the mystery of italian paint codes
