I have removed the sump plug in my 3 1/2 l Abarth sump for the first time to discover it has very little thread left on it... The thread in the sump is not perfect but hopefully salvageable. Can anyone advise on:
Whether the plug should be alloy also (mine is, but I would think steel preferred)?
Whether the dowty seal that was fitted is the way to go?
What thread size is used so that I can try running a tap through the sump thread (I think M22 but the pitch doesn't look std)?

Any other advice welcome..

Cheers

Thanks Arthur M.
New to this but I think I found the thread you refer to.. But it seems to refer to a different scenario and concludes with getting a new sump. I don't think that should be necessary with mine if I can get the right tap to run through the plug thread.. And of course a new plug.
Cheers

Hi SPA, from what you say it looks as if the thread in the sump could be damaged possibly crossthreaded. As long as there is some thread on the plug you took out you should be able to determine the thread size and pitch. Plugs are normally tapered although not always. An alloy plug has been used for a reason. Sometimes there can be a chemical reaction between two different materials. You can not loose anything by trying to rethread the sump. I referred you to the thread as it gave advice should you need to replace the sump, hope not. Regards
