So the New Zealand Transport Agency comes up with these figures for classic 500s still registered.

500s (all models) 229
(note that this includes those that have an exemption certificate, ie. still registered but not on the road, sometimes called 'on hold').

Out of interest there are only 2 Multiplas and 8 600s.

I've attached the spreadsheet (pdf file) which makes interesting reading since they seem to have listed spelling mistakes as separate models.

Those figures were issued before mine passed, so you can increase by one to 230 Bambinas on the road or on hold in NZ.

Seems a high figure given the population of 4.5 million.

Hi,
Forgive me, I took one away in 2012! It still has it's wof sticker (no one will know what that is on this side of the world.) My one was from 1972 and so was an imported one from Italy I believe. Aaah fond memories of breaking down in various parts of Auckland!
With the NHS becoming a less and less attractive employer, I may be wanting to bring it back:rolleyes:.......

Interesting info, Tim.

I don't have the book right in front of me, but I seem to recall that Tod Niall, in his book, "Bambina, the Fiat 500 in NZ," he mentioned there were 400 rego'd 500's. The book was published in 2007.

Seems like a big loss in just 10 years(!)

I was in touch with Todd via the Fiat 500 Bambina Owners of NZ – Facebook site (you should join). He didn't mention any reduction, but was very interested in the numbers. My guess is that with a lot on hold and a great many more out of the system, these numbers could be quite variable.

Tod's book is a great read with some wonderful pictures of the NZ Bambinas and their antipodian history. I did hear that he was also not adverse to owning an even rarer Fiat in NZ , the Fiat 126 Niki. I would put money on there being quite a few more 500s in NZ :)

It is your lucky day then! The fire engine pictured near the back of Todd's book (I am too lazy to go and get the book to find the page number, and I have the dog asleep on my lap) is for sale on TradeMe. It looks to be in very sad condition, but better than some I have seen restored.

I remember this car as a kid getting around the local area promoting fire safety. I have 9 Fiat's already and I need another project like a hole in the head (and I don't want to have to cook my own dinner), but can someone take pity on this poor wee thing please?

Chris

Oh, and add another Fiat 500F to the NZ fleet. I bought the one from my neighbour and it is now back on the road as a daily driver after sitting in his storage shed for nearly 10 years.

You see there they go again...

Surely this classic little piece of NZ history will not go for parts. It seems to be stuck on a $54 bid

Beyond belief that this sold for $57 to a guy in Aukland . I was seriously considering going for it but my Son was working away from home and his wife and the granddaughter were ill so could not get a plan together. It would have been a fantastic project to work on with my grandson when I am in NZ. There is a company in Rotorua that dip whole body shells for the start of a resto. Ah well never mind & I hope the new owner restores the car :)

Late reply sorry. I've just joined. I saw this auction and later saw a post on Facebook showing it about to be crushed. Very sad but can only assumed it was too far gone?

Sorry Tim, that was my first post here and it was a real stinker(n)

In Rotorua now for 12 weeks if anybody is driving this way :)

If you fancy taking in the delights of the all the splendor that Hawkes Bay has to offer then I have a Bambina you can use. You just need to get it running;)
