General Naive newbie question!

Thomas if your car is 104XXXX then it is a F not a L. Also it would make it 1965. The unique thing about all cars made in 1965 is that they were called "ottobolluni". This meant that instead of having 2 bolts holding each door hinge you had 4 bolts per hinge or 8 (otto) per door. Check your door hinges

My car has 2 bolts per hinge, total of 4 bolts per door.
What does this mean?

Thomas, Have you checked where the chassis number is stamped into the bulkhead? It is just under the riveted plate. It is a better check than simply the aluminium plate.
Your car has the earlier type of air-intake grille, which has more screws than later F's and L's and a slight swage-line. That part is also removable but adds to the evidence that your car is 1965. I'm not sure that all 1965 cars had the hinges with four bolts each.
If the area under the speedo assembly is factory-finished for the later, squarer unit and the chassis number is correct and stamped in place then there must have been some serious effort made after manufacture.
So either someone has carefully welded in the chassis details from an earlier car to a later car or the dashboard steel panel from an L has been inserted into an earlier car.
It is even possible that two cars have been welded together. We get that in this country when two badly damaged cars are made into one "good" one.

Only between march and august was the 8 bolts so your car is either early or late 1965

There is no aluminium plate on my car, only the stamp which look factory made to me and comes as a part of the applicable panel, the hinges and the airgrill indicate as you said a 1965 car. Speedo is the one that don't match. I will take a closer look to see if I can see any weld traces at the dash panel
Thank you

Re: She's arrived!

The new woman in my life has now completed a 250 mile high speed trailer ride here and I'm like a big kid with a new toy!!

I mentioned earlier in this thread that there was confusion about which model I have so here we go ......

- 1972 500L on the V5, chassis number matches the chassis plate.
- Checked the chassis plate in the dark(!) and chassis number seems to indicate 1971 as year of manufacture...
Seems about right?
- But, that plate shows 110f as the model?
- Car is RHD, round white surround speedo but with ignition key switch (steering lock?) to the left of the column.
- F type door cards and door handles
- 500L badge on the back

I do have the original owners manual and the steering lock switch appears to be an option. I have a toggle switch where the I thought the ignition switch would be but as yet haven't a clue what it's for!

What d'ya reckon? Hope you don't mind me asking all these beginners questions, thanks in advance.

Mike ?
