Come one somebody out there must have looked at building there
own set of disc brakes on a 500. I have only driven mine a short distance
and they may improve. But oh what a shock ,compared to my other two
cars also with drum brakes the Fiats were cr/p.

Hi. Has anybody out there fitted a F.I.R.E. engine into a 500 and if so
what does it entail .Does it fit without any bulkhead alterations etc

Hi. I have found out why I was having problems regarding alternator not
charging.I was testing it on the bench using a battery drill and it just wasn't
spinning it fast enough. So all fixed, ignition light goes out at last.
I want to replace the rear flexible duct (the one that goes to the thermostat
housing) with a metal one and not aluminium. So if anybody knows where I can get 3 inch flexible duct let mr know.

Google flexible flue liner for a chimney.

What are peoples thoughts on fittng underfelt. I have bought a moulded carpet
(which is not the best or thickest ) and I have got some sticky back
underfelt.Should I stick this to the carpet or the floor or just leave loose.
Also has anybody found a better way of mouting overaking mirror rather than
use the rubber block and grub screws.Something like altering the bracket to fix
perminently to the door pillar etc.

Thanks

Hi. Just about to fit carpet, but first fitting underfelt.I have only driven it a few miles without any interior apart from front seats and found it very noisy.I have filled the reat seat cushion with rockwool insulation.( I think the old stuff was used for nest building by the mice that inhabited it)I am going to fit a sound deadening underfelt under carpet. How thick should I go for 8mm or 12mm to cut noise.

Thanks Bryan

Bryan, some people have used self-adhesive sound-deadening, which I think makes sense as some of the noise will be from the "drumming" of the panels themselves.
The noise inside the car is quite loud in any case but should decrease quite bit once the rear deadening and seats are fitted.
As for thickness, I would have thought the thicker the better.

Hi.I am just doing the odd jobs to finish the project and I had a problem
with the fuel guage not working. When I got the tank it came with a
guage sender.I took it out and althugh it was a bit gotty it seemed to work
testing it with a meter. But no movement of the guage itself.I couldn't
understand how the wiring worked as it had two wires I assumed that
was enough. The red wire had 12v and the pink had about 6v.After scratching
my head I checked to see if the actual tank was earthedand it wasn't.
I then tried it with an earth to the tank an hey presto it worked. But I still don't know why two wires and an earth.Next onto door locks that don't lock with the key.
I have bought a luggage compartment mat. It is very yhin and I was thinking of glueing some underfelt under it .What have you guys done.

Fuel sender unit wires :-

Pink goes to the fuel gauge.

Red (or usually grey with red) goes to the low fuel (reserve) warning light, if fitted.

Tip:- Earthing the pink wire should make the fuel gauge read full (a quick way to check if gauge is working).

Earthing the red (or grey/red) wire should cause the low fuel light (if fitted) to illuminate.

Hth,

Al.

Thanks for that. I will Check to se if I do have a low fuel level light by doing what you say.:worship:

Yes,I have a low fuel level warning light.Luckily for me I put in new bulbs in all the dash lights knowing how difficult it could be just changing an odd one in situ.

Thanks for that
Bryan :):)

Just doing the last few jobs on the list getting l
door locks to actually lock, putting aluminium inset surround on the windows.
It was whilst I was doing this that I slippd with one of the little stainless steel clips that hold it on and scratched the up to now unmarked new paint job.
About a 3in scratch from the window surround to the waist line not down to metal but deep enough.I am now trying to paint using a very fine brush.I have paint in an off the shelf spray can or a small amount left over from the respray.
The aerosol seems a better match ?.Then using 2000 wet and dry to flat off.
If this is not successful I will be ringing a mate to do the job.He has a main dealer job just doing this sort of thing.
Now has anybody had a problem with a door that is hard to close. I have
moved the striker plate to no success and tried adjusting hinges also no joy.
I can remove door rubber ,but it will have to go back on of course :bang:

The door rubbers are probably the issue. Remove them and if the door closes you know where you are. This problem has been covered recently.
There are two thicknesses available in door rubbers - so options exist but also tweaking the shut in the body where the door touches is a solution. It is one of my new year problems that I found when I bought the car - but have yet to sort.

I have removed door rubbers and lock plate. Then got the door to shut properly
and then I kept putting on rubber seal so I knew where it was binding.Along the bottom edge I had to split the seal ,but when the door is open you cant see the
cut and it still seals.
Now what do people think about Italian stripes maybe both sides or front to
back .Any thoughts

As someone who loves to personalize cars - it's up to you....Some will like them - some will not!
Mines dark blue with banana yellow bolt on wheelarches for heavens sake!

It's interesting that it was the bottom edge sticking. All the 500s that I have owned have had a separate piece of very soft rubber clamped by the alloy strip on the sill; the main seal stops short of this on both sides.
As for the Italian stripes; I agree with Andrew and as I think your car is white, wouldn't it liven things up a bit? Just a touch clichéd though but so what, it's whatever feels good to you since you're the one who slaved to resurrect it.
