Hello fiat friends,
I am rebuilding a 1967 RHD 500, I have rebuilt the back suspension and brakes and ready to put he stub axles on. I have all the bits, new bearings, but I am confused how the flexible joint (tr0036) fits, as it seems to push on the stub axle, but will push up against the bearing cover snagging on the bearing housing, I am wondering if I have missed anything?

I have googled images (see attached) but they look like it just sits flush against the bearing.

Any help would be appreciated.

I agree with Peter--it would seem that you are missing the spacer (Fiat part number:- 890292) If I remember correctly, this protrudes out past the oil seal (part number:- 4111171) and the coupling buts up to the spacer. Don't forget to put a NEW collapsible spacer in between the bearings.
Where about do you live? I am in Saltney, 3 miles outside Chester.

have you got the flexible coupling the correct way round?
one side has the centre section pertruding more than the other. this should be on the bearing side which butts up against the inner bearing face.
Also has your inner seal been fitted correctly as this may prevent the parts fitting correctly if it is sticking out too much.

The missing spacer sounds correct, I have built the bearings, and the rubber coupling does stick out perhaps 2mm, but I did expect some metal between the bearing and coupling and this spacer seems the job. Onto Axel Gerat tonight!

I am in Middlewich Cheshire, just between J19&18 on the M6. I usually use Motorbambino but with the weak euro it's been a lot cheaper having parts imported from Germany.

The spacer is in the picture you posted. It's in the part that shows the bearings 2nd from left. It fits inside the wiper seal and is just slightly thicker so it protrudes and butts up against the flexible joint
Part numer 890292

Here's a photo of all the parts in order. Ignore the line of parts along the top-that was my old setup. The gold coloured pieces are the seals and blue tape on the bearings.

Brilliant, thanks for all your help and feedback, next challenge is to put the engine in, still lack of info in the Haynes manual but it looks as if it is quite simple, but any links would be appreciated.

Hello,

In the component picture posted by nzbobz i think the bearing carrier is shown the wrong way around. i.e. the short flange should point outwards towards the breakdrum.

It may be my eyes are bad but as I am spending this weekend stripping the rear hubs of my car to swap the carriers around, having just rebuilt them wrongly, hopefully this may prevent someone from making the same mistake as I have.

Peter

Thanks Peter,

Good catch. I think I remember being confused as to which way they go until I started putting them back together.

I hope yours went together well, including setting the correct pre-load, which seems to be disconcerting for most of us.

If you need some advice setting the preload PM me.

It only took a couple of hours aside as the car was still on axle stands and all tools to hand including my bag of nuts and bolts on a bar to set the preload and of course new bits come apart alot easier than rusty old stuff!. In fact I was more comfortable setting the pre-load second time around (Thanks for the offer all the same Damian).

Rear hubs now sit where they should, front dics fitted ready for bleading tommorow, may even be ready for a Mot in a few weeks time.

Cheers

Peter
