Hi Folks

The time for carpet fitting is fast approaching on my machine.

How have people found them to fit and do they in fact fit?

Straight over the top of the sound deadening or a felt in between? Glued, or glued in places or not at all?

I presume they come without a hole for the seat runners? Any tips for cutting?

And I'll probably want to get some wiring in first. Anything else that should get done first?

Is this something a well-meaning novice can attempt. (The seats turned out ok.)

Could it be a two man job?

Any tips and jokes about shagpile most welcome.

Tim

Hi Tim,
I bought a blue carpet from Van der Laan a couple of weeks ago.
I haven't fitted it properly yet, but laid it in its place for a trial fit.
It wasn't a bad fit. The only areas of concern for me are that the carpet doesn't quite cover the 2 screw holes on the A pillars just under the dash knee pads.
The runners are all cut out ok.
There is no hole for the heater knob.
There is no hole for the throttle pedal. This is my main concern. How have others cut this hole? what size? how do you fit it?
Wasn't sure if to cut the hole first, fit the ns carpet in place, then fit the throttle pedal, then lift the right hand carpet up and fit the centre air duct over the throttle pedal and then fir the rest of the carpet. Otherwise it will need to be a fair size hole for the pedal to go through.
Mine is a LHD remember.
I will probably be fitting sound deadening pads first. Not sure about soundproofing - cant see much point!
Apart from that it wasn't bad.

I had my carpet made by a local upholsterer in separate pieces.

If you get one piece moulded carpet you just have to remember that if you need to access anything for adjustment (handbrake, gear lever, throttle cable etc) the seats have to come out first so you can lift the carpet. Pending on how you anchor the seatbelts you may have to undo these as well. Once the car is set up and running this will not be a problem but initially it may be a hassle. I don't think gluing them down is a good idea.

Hopefully someone who has moulded carpet will confirm this otherwise I am talking rubbish.....

I was able to buy a 2nd hand 1 piece carpet--not perfect, but will suffice until I can get a new carpet (my son's boss owns a motor-vehicle upholstery company--very useful!). 2 points---(1) it is difficult to fit without a lot of fiddling (and a few naughty words) and (2) the sections that cover the wheel-arches seem to be to very voluminous (!?) and it required a lot of 'pulling and heaving' to get those parts to fit nicely. If Tim can get a local upholsterer to make him a carpet (in sections) so much the better.

My original carpet fits well, I touched in the faded bits with black paint.

A few self tappers, original fittings keep it in place easy to remove if there is a problem, I would not stick.
