Hi Folks.

My 1966 500-F is finally being rer-sprayed, hopefully ready soon after Christmas.

Colour will be an off white.

Not being an expert on this, what should I be on the lookout for? I want to ensure the work is done well.

The car has been stripped and the rims will be the same colour. There are a few detached parts to spray too.

Also, I'm thinking of some decals or a stripe. I'm told the best result is to varnish / lacquer over the top of the decal. What are the views on this and what if you want to change the decal?

Nice one!

I'm afraid I don't have any words of advice in response to your questions, but I'm curious how much a glass out respray costs?

I'm going to need to do the sills on mine in 12/18 months and wondered if I should go for a completely new colour. Always fancied a lighter shade, I think you see more of the shape that way!

I personally would stay away from laquering over decals. You can't take them off without causing major damage and then needing a repaint.
Vinyl decals are the way to go and fully removable without damaging paint.
Regards glass out repaint, you could probably get it done from about £500 - £3000 depending on quality & type of paint. And then it depends on if you need any welding or repairs done. Each car is different. Best to decide what you want and then get at least 3 quotes and talk to previous customers to find out what the repairer was like.

Thanks Sean. Good advice on the decals.

My glass out respray is costing me $3,500 (NZ dollars). I've had other similar quotes $3000 to $4000+.

Might have some other questions as they occur. Should be finished by Christmas so next year starts the rebuild – can't wait.

Hi Folks

Some further re-spray questions.

The flat bar across the top of the outside of the roof that holds the vinyl for the sunroof and bolts through the roof – is that seen or covered? I'm thinking it goes over the top of the end of the vinyl to hold it in place, but the vinyl then folds back over it and hides it. So there is no need to spray it the same colour as the body?

Another question regarding carpet and what flooring gets hidden. From memory when I pulled the old rotten carpet out, it covered the front wheel arches, but not the front passenger side panel opposite where the foot pedals are.

Does anyone know if there are any threads here about carpet fitting and where the extremities of the carpet reach?

And anything else I may not have thought of. When you actually come to the spraying part, there's a lot more to think about regarding where to spray and where to mask, even on a glass out re-spray than I thought.

Tim

(Pictures soon.)

Tim, that sunroof bar is mostly hidden but where it broadens for the self-tapper at the ends it can be partially seen especially when the fabric is rolled back. You can get it in stainless steel and most originals appear to be painted black to match the front stretcher bar. On mine it and the front bar are painted an ivory colour which seems intended to match the speedo and wheel "F"). Whatever it's painted with it needs well protecting because that can be quite a damp area.
The carpet doesn't cover the verticals of the front inner bulkhead and as a precaution I would make sure that only the more or less horizontal parts of the floor inside were treated as hidden areas when painting. Everyone these days seem to paint every square millimetre inside and out to a show standard in any case.

Why not powdercoat it? That's my plan. To save a lot of hassle with the tin work, the exhaust, and some of the suspension components, my resto plan includes a healthy dosage of powder-coating.

I haven't seen much talk about that here on the forum. Is that because it's not prevalent in the UK (where most of the members seem to be)? Just curious.

Powder coating is common in the UK. But the reason I stayed away from it, is because it chips easily and once it chips it can start to peel off.

I have visions of fitting lovely new powder coated tin work on the engine that will look great initially but after accidentally dropping a spanner or screwdriver on it a few times whilst working on the engine, if it chips it won't look too good. At least with a decent heat resistant paint you can patch it up ok if you have any mishaps.

Powder coating is great on certain components but be careful as some parts need to be bare metal ie on hubs etc. also you get s high build of paint. All depends on budget and if you want to do it yourself or not.
I've gone for the stainless steel bar & as Peter said you need to make sure it is well sealed around the holes

Powder coating is excellent, BUT the component metal MUST be perfectly clean and etch primed before coating or the powder coat will chip and lift easily.

Tagging on to this can anyone reccomend a good place to get paint matched/sprayer in the South East (UK)?

Have some chips inside the boot/fuel tank comparment that I wish to go over but a non-standard paint (pearlescent white) means not sure what colour to go for.

Thanks for any help.

Are you looking for someone to spray it or just match the colour so you can do it yourself?

If the latter there is a place in Croydon called LE Went who are major suppliers for a lot of sprayers in the south east. I am pretty sure they could either help you or point you in the right direction of someone who can match the colour.
