Anybody got any handy tips for getting the castellated nut out of the steering box. I've soaked it in wd40. I've made a key of 3mm thick steel and put it in 2 of the castellations but this just bent. Don't want to get too aggresive as I don't want to damage the threads. Plan B is to make a castellated socket, put it in a big vice and try and get some leverage on it. I'm open to any easier ideas though

I made a tool which was right angled steel ground to fit the nut width and the right angled piece allowed a big adjustable to overcome the resistance.

Want a picture?

Or borrow the tool?

here you go...

I take it you removed the split pin??? ;) ;) ;) ;)

Sorry couldn't resist ;)

I didn't need to adjust mine, so just left it in place while I changed the seals etc., so sorry I can't help from experience. I suspect a bit of heat might help. Heat the nut up and let it cool a few times, before heating it again and trying your key again.

The heat is certainly not going to affect your casing.

cheers, Steve

Top bloke Andrew. I reckon I can knock up something similar at work. I've just come up with this idea for a tool in my head. Thanks for the offer. Will keep you posted how I get on

Yep, same with me. I couldn't budge it and used something similar to what Andrew made. I was trying more and more force with greater and greater potential to damage the threads.

So, I opted to go to my local machine shop and let them do it. They made a tool to fit and popped it right off. A bit over-engineered for a one-time job tho...

I can look into seeing if I can ship this to you cheaply if you want.

Wow Bob that certainly is a bit of a tool in the nicest possible way. Not over engineered at all. Right tool for the right job etc!!!!!

Thanks Bob but not necessary. That tool of yours is exactly what I'm making although I'm using dowels. If mine works I'll distribute around the UK members and you look after the NZ/Oz lot;-)
