Re: Wheel trim bolts

Thanks Steve.

It's finding some with a pretty head that's proving tricky. It's nice if it's quite slimline.

Re: Wheel trim bolts

Not entirely convinced that stainless would be my choice of wheel bolt, most stainless bolts are the wrong tensile strength.

I do not think that tensile strength is that important for the bolts that hold the hub cap on? Also not too sure about the tensile strength of the standard 500 wheel bolts as when I got my 500L the wheel bolts were seriously necked in below the bolt head like they had been subjected to a tensometer. I think it was more a case of the bolts being fairly light duty and those jolly old Kwik Fit Fitters being over efficient with the hammer air gun

Re: Wheel trim bolts

These only hold the hub caps on, so not the wheel bolts you are thinking of. :)

They were easy to measure as fortunately I just took off a set as I'm replacing the standard steels for alloys. They are M10 x 1.25 15mm and they appear to be chrome plated.

You're right, the hex head is thin, it's actually domed, 4mm at the edge and about 7mm at the centre. Stainless hex equivalent will have a head width of 7mm.

I can get four stainless bolts and stick them in a Jiffy bag tomorrow if you want. If yes PM me as I'm getting some bolts tomorrow anyway, so buying them will be easy.

cheers, Steve

Morning one 'n all;
need a bit of technical help from owners of 500s with original pattern wheels (190pcd)--what are the dimensions of the wheel bolts? are they 10mmx1.25mm thread? I am trying to make up a 'locating stud' for a friend. The idea is that you (finger tight only) screw the stud into a wheel bolt orifice before you fit the wheel which greatly assists lining up the wheel bolts holes. When you have a couple of wheel bolts in place, you take out the stud and fit a correct wheel bolt. This makes it much easier to fit (and take-off) wheels. Look forward to any help that can be given--thank you.

Don't the brake drums have a locating lug on them that goes into a hole in the wheel? ISO standard for M10 is a 1.5 pitch

Yes, the drums already have a small pin sticking out which fits a tiny hole in the wheel.
Place the drum with pin at 12 o' clock and fitting a lightweight, original 500 wheel couldn't be much easier.

Thanks for the information Paolo, much appreciated. Yes, you and Peter are absolutely correct, there should be a small wheel locating stud, but it is not always there, hence the wheel locating stud for my friend, and the long stud does help locate the wheel, especially on the rear where there is a lot of negative camber on the wheel when it is raised off the ground.

They are M10 but I'm unsure of the tread pitch other than to say it's a fine pitch but unsure of its value.

1.25mm pitch as is every thread I've come across on my car

Standard is 1.5mm and will start...but with dire consequences.....I know.....:bang:
