My overriders arrived today - thinking of fitting them instead of the "L" handle bars - along with my yellow lensed Carello "half moon" fog lights.....Its getting close to being ready..............
Off for two weeks to Siena in Tuscany with my six children - and upon my return the great rebuild will commence

having replaced the door hinge pins and sorted all the door internals with spare winding mechs etc I have noticed that I don't have any interior door handles.............Should a 1971 "L" have these?

Hi Andrew;
My 1971 500L has the same door-handles as in your pictures. On my original doors the retaining screws were 5mm c/sunk, but on my replacement 'pattern' doors they are 6mm c/sunk--check which they are because the door handles are made for 5mm screws, so you may (surprise, surprise!) have to do some 'fettling'. Do NOT shut the doors with the door pockets!! Have you been able to collate your collection of surplus instruments yet?

are there pre-drilled holes for these handles in the door frame?
I've put the trim back on and was about to refit them when I noticed there were no interior handles....:eek:
There were no holes in the door trim so I didn't know I was missing anything....

Hi Andrew;
There are normally NO holes pre-cut in the door trim fabric, but there are usually 'cut-aways' in the card. Before you put the door card in place, put a piece of masking-tape on the door (just above the door-card) with the location of the pre-drilled and tapped holes (for the handle screws) marked on it. That way when the door card is in place, you can, carefully, cut away the fabric where the screws have to go through--pre-check the screw size first!

Mrs H is fine with my project cost.
Next project is to build a usable 1960's style beetle and get shot of the Mercedes battle bus for her......and her design ......so the 500 is fine by her.....

Off to http://www.calosi.eu/index.htm tomorrow. Going for some lovely cars.
We found a glorious 1959 500 today - absolutely mint from Germany here in Tuscany with a mirror bolted onto windscreen scuttle panel.....
We haven't seen as many 500's as I hoped ..only 6... Maybe most have been brought to UK...

Popped there last year and it was all closed up! Hope you have better luck than me

I was in the Senigallia area earlier this year (Mille Miglia time) and I reckon that I saw about 6 a day, some parked, some being driven and by all age groups. When they have a Raduno in that area they usually have a police escort to get them through traffic light and junctions, and often there are so many cars in attendance that they can't all be fitted into the town squares of the smaller towns. Believe me, the 500 is alive and well in Italy.
