Tuning Canterbury 695

Tuning Canterbury 695

You can see it in Steve's photos Andrew. There is a heavy-duty adaptor plate which bolts to the swivel-axle in place of the drum back-plate. The caliper bolts to this plate. The discs are bolted through to the 126 hub which is a separate item from the drum in the case of the later 126.

I have read elsewhere that, depending on which calipers you use, there can be issues with wheel sizing. I have also read that some kits are made with modified components which may mean that supplied pads can be cut-down versions which aren't just available off the shelf.

PS. I see Steve already said most of that....

Only other piece of advice I can give Andrew is:- confirm absolutely that the are suitable for 12in wheels.

If you are going to build up a suitable disc brake set up on the 126 stub axles with the Cinquecento callipers then you need the 126 hubs and bearings etc so you can mount the pcd adapters. Steel ones are heavy but I would avoid the aluminium ones. For the brakes you will need to have a standard disc machined down to 210 mms diameter, the calliper carriers will require modification to avoid rubbing on the disc and the disc pads themselves will need to be ground or machined away for the same reason. If you look at the red set above you can see that the bar across the front of the calliper has been cut away.

Have finally resolved machining issue.
Spent half an hour chatting to Tony @ Middle Barton and he happens to have the very same kit as I have bought, awaiting his appraisal.

He agreed to machine my crankcase and carryout the exhaust mounting mod - so it went off in a well stuffed box - and we will meet at AutoItalia to return the case to me.

Now this disc conversion...I'm awaiting confirmation from two suppliers that the product they offer fits over 12" rims - both in Italy - both yet to respond.......
one is:http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/COPPIA-FRENI-A-DISCO-ANTERIORI-FIAT-500-EPOCA-/321720091443? looks great with adaptor included

The second one :http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/331244292087?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
requires adaptor plates at 50 Euro's

Failing these its the ones Steve found - 70 pounds or so more expensive...;)

this just leaves working out the compression ratio......pipetter at the ready...;)

Had a chat with Tony at Middle Barton at AutoItalia......returned home invigorated to get started on the front suspension.
The king pins etc were delivered last week and I was keen to get going.

Removed old front spring and put new lowered spring on new mounts.

My God its a very different shape!!!
The old one is a beautiful radiused curve - the new one is straight as a die!!
This maybe a low ride!!!

Started to assemble the front suspension and disaster.....just as I was tightening wishbone pivot bolts, either bolt or new nut has stripped just as it was biting......now I've got to get the bugger off and see whats occoured - the joy of old motors..............:bang:

Its coming together...............

Good going :)

I didn't have quite the restraint as you, and while I was there I stripped out all the steering components and brakes too. :) All the bushing did need changing though, so six new TRE's, relay block, master cylinder and piping.

I see you went for 4x98 pattern then, are you planning to use adapters, or going for different wheels?

cheers, Steve

And heres a five speeder.....Its been a challenge......!!

I have replaced everything bar the shocks which will be a later up-grade.
Rebuilt steering box - completely new - rods, bushes, spring, spring mounts, stub axles, master cylinder, hoses......

Spacers have been painted matt black - Borranis now have tyres.:)

I am aware that the fifth gear selector is back to front......its been apart A LOT

Steering box, steering idler and brake master cylinder on last night...nearside stub axle tonight.......
Time is precious with six small children and a broken Fiat 500......

Still having fun with the gearbox re-build.....oh for some clear instructions........I will not be beaten:devil:

Went to pick up engine internals today.....they've had heaps of work....
Crank ground and then balanced with the new up-rated rods and pistons.....there is a lot of heavy metal going on there......:)

Apparently balancing the crank is a horrendous task and invoved £180 worth of the heavy stuff....thats uprated rods for you...

The flywheel, clutch and pulley are also balanced......should see an improvement in revs.

Hoping that along with the 5 speed box - that it will keep up with modern motorway traffic......kinda think that it would be fun for my 130 mile daily commute occasionally..........

Dropped off some M8 threaded inserts to be put in the head exhaust ports prior to its completion later this week.....stainless studs will be used.

Crankcase is coming with the Abarth exhaust mod......so a build will be on in the next couple of weeks:)

I thought I was the only person who saw balanced, lightened, two cylinder engine internals as a thing of beauty.............?

Had a busy afternoon with my new friend Steve the engine builder.
We've been talking final specfication requirements - and I should have an engine back together within the week!
We were talking compression ratio's and making decisions on head gasket vs reinforcing plates for the barrels.
We are trying for a compression ratio of 11:1 and with new steel rods and well balanced bottom end, a red line approaching 7000 - an improvement over the 4700 it currently runs at....
He is very well read on all things engine building...and has a workshop full of engine exotica in states of build.
What with the up-rated clutch, flywheel balance, 35-75 cam and Dellorto FZD lets see what it will make when put on his rolling road.....today it had a full works Lotus Elan.....last time it had a genuine Giannini 500 on it...;)
