General New centre console

General New centre console

It looks nice but as I need one with circular holes, I might make my way back down to my mate the panelbeater and see what he can fabricate.

Chris

The stereo panel is pre cut for the unit and actually swivels from the top fixing. This shows it could be replaced quite easily. The panel below the stereo also swivels from the top as this is a cubby box. This panel could be fixed in place and some holes could be cut into it with the back of instruments and wiring nicely hidden away. The back panel of this box is just a hard board panel. It has potential for multi uses. Ricambio have asked if they can use my photographs in their brochure, which is nice.:)

Hi Tim

The console is sitting on the tunnel, to which I have secured the console at the bottom using a bracket that screws to the bottom of the console and down the sides of the tunnel. I covered this bracket with the tunnel carpet so only the self tappers show, which when painted black vanish. Note the photograph shows the console positioning. It slightly overlaps the clutch pedal but does not interfere with it at all or with its operation. As far as fit goes, I have attached a drawing of the glove box and how to cut it down to reduce its height, thereby allowing for a good fit whilst retaining a thinner aperture glove box. The console upper fixing is through the glove box bottom and the glove box original mounting points remain the same, all be it reworked at the front fixings as per the drawing. The glove box is the original in compressed cardboard, it would be more difficult to try this with a later plastic glovebox. The overall fit up does not restrict anywhere and with my svelte self, there are not issues with driving or comfort at all. Other than for a big bloke the normal scenario. All in it is a decent addition, not one for the purist granted, but I'm not a purist, more of a stylist ha ha.

The rear shelf comes from Ricambio and Van Der Laan, same sort of price. It is already badged and has the speaker cut outs already done. 4" speakers with about 1 5/8" depth fit. I chose Kenwoods for the size and then wattage which is 220 W combined, plenty to beat the engine noise.

Cheers

The thing I really like about Gary's approach with his car is that it shows that he makes good regular use of it, which is what it should all be about. :)

Hi Pete

Thank you for that, and to show form, here she is in Market Bosworth last weekend and to show some scale, parked next to a motorbike. Shows just how small 500's are and I like the constant appreciative comments from passers by.:D

Cheers

Hi Hugh or should I say Gary.

Thanks for the consul and speaker info. Also cutting down the glove shelf is helpful too. Mine's an original cardboard type.

I didn't want to appear critical when questioning the space, sorry if it seemed that way. Being in graphic design, I'm more for style and looks too and your interior looks great, plus added practicality of the consul.

Now, what colour....

Cheers

Tim

Hi Gary.
I'm going for red and black interior too, but with an off white body I think it will be more red than black. I know they do a red console at Ricambio.
Where I am at the moment, work on the interior is just dreaming.

Hi Gary

I know this is an old thread but I'm just working on my interior and following some of your styling. Got the same console, although mine is edged in red. Got some Kenwoods and it looks like we have the same parcel shelf too – I'm not copying you, honest.

2 things on the parcel shelf.

Firstly, I note that there is a plywood strut in the centre and this fouls the rear seat strap. I'm assuming I'll have to break the strut off and re-glue off centre?

Secondly, what did you do under the parcel shelf? I assume the original vinyl behind the back seat just runs up to the rear window, under the shelf. But when you fold the back seat down, you would see under the parcel shelf. Did you fill that gap in at all? And if so, how?
