I really have to slam both doors to get them shut. The latches and the striker look ok... is there an adjustment I'm not seeing?

There are adjustments but I also had to put spacer washers behind the hinges to get a good fit. Also what door trim do you have fitted ? If it is not the proper door seal you will always have problems. Aftermarket door seal is too big for the 500. Pull the seal off & see if the door shuts OK.

I have had my car for over 25 years, welcome to a world of frustration with the doors.

With old rubbers, the left hand door always needed a slam but the shut line was good. Right hand door also always needed to be slammed, but the shut line at the rear edge of the door is terrible.

Recently fitted new rubbers and nothing has changed. I too have adjusted the striker plate on the RHS. Even ground off a couple of mm on the back of the plate to give me some more clearance.

My car is away having some self inflicted indescretions fixed. (More on that when I can think about what I did without getting cranky.) I asked the panel beater to have a look at the drivers door. I think the only other adjustment is to remove the door seal and tap the metal lip in a little. I was never keen to do this.

The thing that surprises me in all this is that I have met others that have the same issue and that the plastic door pulls have never broken under the stress of the slam.

I will report back if the panel beater was able to make any adjustments.

Regards

Be careful of replacement trim rubber: it is often less pliant than the original, making the doors hard to shut. No fix for this excerpt shopping for the most pliable runners you can find.
