hi my accelorator is sticking so i thought i would change the cable however i cant find reference to this in the manual and on getting under the car cant see the cable, Can anyone tell me how you change it and the procedure, thanks

Hi Stocky;
Before you struggle with the cable, check your accelerator pedal and cross-shaft---these are known to get muck and grit in and get semi-seized; often helps to put a washer under each of the holding-screw-lugs to lift it off the floor a shade---try that first.:)

This is what it looks like -

That photos great I have a metal tunnel covering the centre is that correct?
I have put washers under the bolts but still sticking
Next step is to remove this tunnel I think I need to remove plastic console fold back carpet and remove front metal tunnel to have a look at whats happening
Am I right?

Right i need advise please before i proceed further.
have removed front linkage and rear, the carb linkage works fine so ruled that out.
The cable appears to be sticking I assume in the tunnel where its going into the front of the sleeve?
I have two problems
I cant work out where the front of the sleeve conects to?
From under it looks like it goes into the tunnel and from the front i can see the cable going into a guide pipe but cant see up tunnel far enough.
Is there an access hatch in the rear of the car somewhere?
Second the bracket bolt holding the outer cable in position under the rear of the car is obscured by the gearbox so i cant get a smsll spanner on it so i wont be able to remove the old outer cable.
Given the problem is probably a kink in the inner cable can i just pull out that and feed just the new inner cable all the way through the rear first to see if that solves it, worse case im back where i am now?
I would appreciate advise as I dont want to pull the old cable out and find you cant just push a new inner all the way from the front.

There is an access plate on the top rear of the tunnel. You will have to get the carpet out of the way to get to it.

Sorted
for anyones info you dont need to take off the rear tunnel plate as the tube runs to the outside under the car
As the outer sleave was clamped i release the inner cable and removed and just fed a new inner cable through, tested and no sticking so great

Thread revive! Very handy info and pics here already.

My throttle and choke cables are definitely in need of replacement soon, before they break. Can I use simple bicycle brake cables for this (have done before with minis) or any other generic cable product? Plan is to grease and rethread the outer with an inner cable as I have no reason to suspect the outer is damaged.

I assume about 1.5m is what's required.
Thanks!

don't put grease on cables.... or oil....
dirt sticks to them.... then you complain your choke/starter or throttle is sticking..
you can use bike cables.. but these days I doubt there is much difference in price, besides many bike cables are nylon lined... and fiat engine bays get hot...
and what happens if you heat a bit of cable running inside a nylon liner???

don't ask how I know!!!

The choke cable needs to act in both directions; when you turn off the choke/starting device, you are pushing he cable backwards. Consequently they are both made from solid steel wire. Braided wire cable won't function in that way.
Cables are pleasingly inexpensive.:)

Thanks for the replies, the intricacies of something seemingly so simple :)

I was hoping I could find an alternative simply because it takes so long for parts to get here and I get impatient! Very frustrating 2+ weeks waiting for exhaust parts so far, I just want to get her driving!

But it sounds like in this case I should just be patient, it's not an urgent repair but does look like an issue waiting to arise

you see that was your second mistake.. thinking anything on a Fiat 500 was simple....
this is not some modern euro trash where you hook it up to a computer and it tells you which bolt is loose... this is Italian engineering at its finest....

Your firsts mistake was actually buying a fiat 500..

"When I were a lad, if dad needed new cable, we ad to go to Iron works, get a lump of molten metal l carry it ome in our ands, and ge it te dad, e would ommer it till it were like thread and then put it in car, then we cud gew t seeside, av bag of chips mushy peas and bottle of pop for family of 12 and still av change from 1/2 crown.....
