to test it, turn off everything that draws current, lights, radio etc. and hold a multimeter across the two terminals of the battery it should read about 12v.
Then start the car up and put headlights on full beam and check voltage at idle should be about 13.8v
Then run it at around 2500rpm and leve headlights on and it should now read around 14.4v
