Hi there,
I am looking to buy this 1982 Spider Turbo, it feels pretty tight, can't see much in the way of rust, but when I lifted it up, I found this damage on the driver side (left) frame rail behind the front tyre.
A mechanic here says its not a huge deal, just a bad repair and it can just be patched and welded properly, but it looks scary to me!
Also took photos of the rest of the underside, if anyone sees anything to cause concern it would be good to know!
Thanks so much!

Chris

The important question is whether it is rust or jacking damage, or the result of a collision. It looks like a poor repair from either rust, or rust due to jacking it up carelessly. If it does not look bent, it should be ok, and even better if the repair is re-done nicely.

Right! The owner doesn't know what it is, he's an old fella, and did up the engine and stuff but apparently never raised it up to look underneath?? Regardless, even if he knew, he's not saying..
Talking to someone else, they said that they doubted it was rust, as for it to rust SO BADLY to require that level of repair and not have spread a lot further would be odd? Not sure..
I would agree it seems more like a crush situation, are the frame rails that fragile that a bad jacking point would do that?

Cheers for replying! :)

You can see in the second photo where right after the fix there is a crushed part of the rail, as if it was crushed upwards (from a bad lift?)
