Hi, I have a spider 1981 2000 which has been garaged for a while, I tried to start her this morning, and when i put the ignition full on the petrol pump is working, but it is continuing to whir and petrol is leaking from the first joint which is happening because of the pressure i take it.
The motor is turning over but not starting, So my question is should the petrol pump continue to whir.

The fuel pump is controlled (turned on) using a relay (the double or duel relay) and the mass air flow sensor. If no air is passing through the air flow sensor, the flap stays in a "resting" position and the fuel pump is cut off; as soon air starts flowing, the flap moves and sends a signal to the relay to turn the pump on.

If your pump is running without the motor running, there is a "issue" somewhere; however if the motor is turning over then there is air flow and the pump should run while the motor turns even though it's not running.

Going to open up a dead thread here..

Hi, just bought this 80 Spider, well I actually traded my 84 Vette straight across for it. I think I got the better end of the deal, but I suppose value is all a matter of perspective!

Anyhow.....

it won't start. It will run for a moment with starter fluid. So knowing that, it gets spark, and knows it is supposed to be sending a signal to the distributor/plugs to fire when I am cranking it.

I do NOT hear the fuel pump prime when I turn on the key.
I replaced the fuel pump, and when I bypass the dual relay under the glove box, the fuel pump runs.
I also replaced the dual relay.
If I move the Air Flow Sensor, the fuel pump will start. I just did this, so I haven't had a lot of time to see if that is the issue.

The issue, is that when I turn the key, there is no signal getting through to the fuel pump to turn on and pump.
Also, on a side note, none of my dash gauges work.

Any ideas?
