Technical Hi I'm David Schien

Forgive me I forgot to tell you that it 1979 spider 2000. I see the bolts how the hell do you get the out?

Hi David, have you got a fuel injected model? It all gets pretty tight trying to get past the injection manifold to work.
You will probably find it easier to work from beneath.

Disconnect the battery. Then disconnect the cables from the starter.
Remove the 3x13mm bolts that attach the starter to the bell housing.
Then pass the starter forward and down until you can feed it down through bottom of the engine bay.

There are a couple of tricks you can pull to gain some access room:
Dropping the rear gearbox crossmember will allow you to tip the engine back without dismantling anything serious.
Undoing the engine mounting will allow you to jack the engine up on the starter side for extra clearance.
Popping the draglink balljoints will allow you to move the steering linkage if you need to.

The starter motors come in different shapes and sizes so which port of exit you use will vary. You can pass it forward and lift it out near the front of the engine or drop it down past the x-member either in fron or behind.

Don't be affraid to do a bit of "enabling" work to give you the necessary access. It's often easier to pop a few bolts on something that is in your way than to struggle to work around it.

Thank You for your help. My car is not fuel injected model.I'm rebuilding the car and got stuck at the starter. Is there a combo of ext. to use? Please send me where I can get help rebuilding the car. I love the car.

Well that will give you a lot more room to get to the starter then.

I use a 3/8 drive universally jointed 13mm socket and long extension to get to the starter bolts. A set of UJ sockets is a godsend!

Where abouts in the world are you and what sort of work do you need to do?
