I am new to the forum, and just purchased a 1978 Fiat 124 Spider. I took it to get it smogged today and, it failed. the technition said that it was running too rich and that the EGR valve was not properly functioning. there is some sort of choke that was put on the car in july, so im thinking that might have somthing to do with it? i really could use some advice, i have never owned an older car before, and am puzzled. Also theres some rust on the body? is that a big deal? i checked and theres none in the trunk or under the floor mats so i figured i could sand it down and repaint? other than that it operates perfectly, please help.

i don't live where smog testing is an issue. but, if i knew where you lived, i might be able to steer you to a Fiat friendly mechanic.

surface rust is not big deal. where you want to be concerned about rust is shock towers (in the wheel wells), and the floor boards, especially under the driver's feet. if you have rust issues there, and are not a capable welder, the cost of repair prolly would exceed the replacement cost of the body shell.

ok good, i dont think there is any rust in those areas. i live in California, the Sacramento area.
