Are the telescoping front bumper tubes STRONG enough to attach a tow bar to? I want to tow a 124 Spider, 1982 model, on a tow bar. I have removed the front bumper and have attached a tow bar to these telescoping tubes. Everything appears sufficiently strong and I have suitable safety chains also attached just to be "safe". Has anyone out there attached a tow bar in this fashion and actually towed a Spider this way? I will be towing from Seattle to Miami FLORIDA, close to 4000 miles! Please advise and give me your opinion. Thank you, David Halfhill 250 658 0850 or [email protected] or forum---your choice, of course.

If the tubes are in good shape and not collapsed you'd have to think there would be no problem with what you want to do.

Do not pack anything additional into the car that would add weight as with a tow bar the front of the car needs to be heavier than the rear for it to track well.

Consider putting a few extra pounds of air pressure in the front tires as well, slow down when making turns in rain, on snowy, icy, or sandy road surfaces.

I towed one from NY to Topeka Kansas with a Uhaul tow bar, but that was a 70 with solid bumper mounts, but fragile bumpers with a 70 Volvo 145, both were new at the time, the front bumper survived with no problem,

I prefer to disconnect the drive shaft for that distance.
